CHAPTER 17

EMERSYN

I walked off of the field with my gym bag slung over my shoulder. I’d started practicing again even though official summer practices hadn’t started. I still had to walk across the stage, but I didn’t want to lose the high that I was on taking a break until actual practices started up. I wanted to make sure that the next time I stepped on a field in front of my college coach, I was ready. We had a scrimmage coming up where our team would just be split into two and play against each other and I wanted to be able to hold my own.

I popped the top off of my water bottle and took a drink as I unlocked my car door with my key ring. I tossed my bag into my passenger’s seat and locked my door before starting my car. I glanced at the clock on the dash and then slowly pulled out. I’d done a later workout and I was supposed to be meeting up with Flinn for quick dinner and catching up.

Flinn and I talked a lot. We talked about everything and nothing. I talked to him about college. He talked to me about his older brothers and how he felt like he was constantly in their shadow. He talked about how they underestimated him. He talked about the pressure that they put on him. I talked to him about my siblings, about how Milani had pushed me away and blocked me out when we’d once been close. I talked to him about how I’d slept with Kawhi’s friend and how he’d said he forgave me, but things were still a little weird. I talked to him about Knox and the relationship he had with our mom. I told him about the shit show my party had been and how pissed my parents had been about me both inviting Knox and standing by while he tore into my mom. He talked to me about his ex-girlfriend who’d decided he’d worked too much. I talked to him about Lerenz.

I wasn’t sure how we’d gotten as close as we had in the time that we had but I genuinely considered him one of my best friends. Outside of Faith, he was the only friend I had that wasn’t related to me. Any of the people I’d been around in high school had been an acquaintance. Kawhi had unknowingly made sure of that. Girls wanted to befriend me to get close to him. Boys took one look at him and heard him talk about how protective he was and either bowed out because of fear or came on to me too hard because they wanted to prove that they weren’t afraid.

I turned my cell phone on while at a red light and set it in the cup holder. I heard it vibrate over and over but resisted the urge to glance at it while I was driving to my place. I needed to take a quick shower.
